First Baptist Church Theodore, located on Bellingrath Road, was organized in 1897 as a mission of Zion Baptist Church, Mobile, Alabama. Reverend J. S. Lombard was Pastor and Mr. H. W. Bolton, Church Clerk.

The first small church building, located near the present Bellingrath Garden sign, was destroyed in the 1906 hurricane. The congregation met in a one-room school building nearby. The present location was purchased in 1907 and a one-room church was built, only to be damaged by the 1916 hurricane. The first Sunday School building was added in 1930 and on May 31, 1931 dinner on-the-grounds was held after the dedication of the remodeled auditorium and Sunday School building.

The “Stone Sanctuary” was erected in 1950 – 51. Vernon D. Simpson was Pastor and on July 15, 1951, a dedication service and the first Homecoming Day was held.

Two Education buildings were dedicated in 1957.

In February, 1980, Rev. Lonnie B. Byrd was called as Pastor. On December 16, 1984, ground was broken for our new Sanctuary and Office Complex. Dedication of these buildings was held on October 27, 1985. Renovation of the “Stone Sanctuary” into our Fellowship Hall was made in 1989.
